What Is the Best Age for Breast Augmentation?
The decision about when to get your breast augmentation is a very personal one. There is no single best age for breast augmentation, but there is probably a best age for your breast augmentation once you take into account the different factors that should influence your decision, including your current lifestyle, your health, your financial situation, and your life plans.
If you are considering breast augmentation, we can talk through the decision with you and help you determine the best age for your procedure. Schedule a breast enlargement consultation with Denver cosmetic surgeon Dr. David Broadway at The Broadway Center for Plastic Surgery for help in making this decision.
Too Young for Breast Augmentation
Saline breast implants are only approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for women aged 18 and older. Silicone breast implants are only approved for women 22 years or older. We agree that no woman should receive breast implants until her breasts have reached maturity. You will get better, longer-lasting results if you wait until your breasts have matured before getting breast implants.
The Most Popular Ages for Breast Augmentation
Most women have breast augmentation in their twenties or thirties, according to American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) statistics. About 30% of breast augmentations are performed on women in their twenties, and about 35% on women in their thirties. These are generally the ideal ages for breast augmentation. Women at these ages are in good health, are very aware of how others perceive them and the impact that breast size can have on that perception, and are mature enough to make this important decision.
Breast Implants Now, Later, or Both?
If you are considering breast augmentation, there are many important factors to weigh before you know it is time for your breast implants. First, consider how much breast implants will affect your quality of life. If you are daily affected by the size or appearance of your breasts, and your awareness of them makes a serious impact on your happiness, maybe breast implants would be better sooner rather than later.
You should also consider whether you can afford breast augmentation. Consider not only your current finances, but also how stable your finances are. We can work together with you to evaluate your finances and make a plan for paying for your breast augmentation that accounts for future life changes and events.
It is best to look at your life plans before deciding on breast augmentation. If you are planning on having children in the immediate future, it may be best to wait before having breast implants. But if you have no immediate plans, there are only a few considerations to take into account. Although most women with breast implants can breastfeed (and, of course, breast implants pose no risk to a breastfeeding child), breast implants do increase the chances that you will be unable to breastfeed. In addition, pregnancy with or without breastfeeding can affect the results of your breast augmentation, and may require a breast augmentation revision to restore the results you enjoyed at first.
Also, remember that breast implants are not lifetime devices. At some point you may have to either remove and replace your implants or completely remove them. Completely removing your breast implants may negatively affect the appearance of your breasts. In deciding on the best age for your breast augmentation, take into account the need for possible follow-up operations.
There is no upper limit on the age for breast augmentation, as long as you are in good health.
