Breast Augmentation Recovery: Planning for the First Post-Op Week

Denver, Lone Tree and Boulder, Colorado

Your first week of recovery after breast augmentation is a time when you should have nothing else on your mind but rest and recuperation. As one of the country’s most progressive cosmetic surgeons, Dr. David Broadway, serving the Denver/Boulder area of Colorado, will prepare you well for recovery. You will also have the opportunity to take advantage of his unique Wellness and Recovery Program for breast augmentation

Plan Ahead

Make sure you have all of your breast augmentation questions answered before your surgery. Clean your house, mow lawns and do all heavy work before surgery.

Avoid lifting your hands over your head this first week. Any task that requires raising your arms should be done by someone else. That includes washing your hair or getting food or dishes out of cupboards or freezers. Make sure you have plenty of button-down blouses or front-opening robes or nightwear clean and laid out where they are easily accessible. Avoid clothes that must be pulled over your head so that you do not put tension on your breast implant incisions.

Week #1

Your first postoperative week will be easier if you have someone to care for you, at least for the first few days. Your job is to rest and heal. You will feel fatigued and may not have the energy you need to care properly for yourself these first critical postoperative days.

  • You will not be able to shower for the first 2 days after surgery, so prepared to take sponge baths and if you must wash your hair have someone do it for you.
  • You will have to clean the tubes that drain fluid from the surgery sites. These will be removed during your first follow-up visit.
  • Monitor your temperature regularly and report any fever immediately. You want to prevent any possibility of infection.
  • To avoid infections you must keep your incisions and sutures dry. This means no water or lotions of any kind.
  • You must also take any prescribed antibiotics on time. DO NOT stop them prematurely without notifying your surgeon. Stopping antibiotics in the middle of a course can de-sensitize bacteria leaving that antibiotic ineffective for you in the future.
  • You will be sent home from recovery with a pain medicine pump to increase your comfort.
  • Ice packs will help reduce swelling during the first 48 hours.
  • Take only the medications prescribed. Aspirin and ibuprofen are blood thinners that can cause dangerous bleeding after surgery. Many herbal remedies cause dangerous reactions with medications and anesthetic gasses. Some can be life threatening.
  • Sleep with your head and torso propped up, and on your back to help reduce swelling.

Your First Follow-Up Exam

If Dr. Broadway used non-dissolvable sutures, he or his staff will probably remove them along with the drains during this visit. He will also check for any signs of infection, for proper healing and that you are progressing as he anticipated. If you are having any problems with your surgery, the implants, your recovery or caring for yourself, make sure you let Dr. Broadway know so that he can resolve these issues before they become serious.

Sub-Glandular vs. Sub-muscular Post-Op Facts

Knowing the pain and healing differences between sub-glandular and sub-muscular implant placement will help you make better recovery plans. Most patients who have had sub-glandular implant placement heal faster and experience less pain than those who have had sub-muscular implant placement. Be sure to discuss pain levels and pain management with Dr. Broadway.

After your first week recovery from breast augmentation during the second to twelfth weeks gets easier, but use caution and progress slowly. These are still recovery weeks.
