Breast Augmentation and Scarring
Denver, CO
Women have breast augmentation to improve the appearance of their breasts and are often concerned that scarring will reduce the positive results achieved by the procedure. All surgery leaves scars, and breast augmentation is no exception, but rarely does scarring detract from the results of breast augmentation. With skillful placement of incisions, a good surgical technique, and appropriate postoperative care, Dr. David Broadway and The Broadway Center for Plastic Surgery ensure that you have the minimum scarring possible from your procedure.
The best way to learn about scarring after breast augmentation is to talk to us in person and look at our detailed before and after photographs. Schedule a breast augmentation scarring consultation today so we can talk about factors that influence your results, including scarring.
Breast Augmentation Incision Options
We offer three incision options for breast augmentation that allow you to decide where your scar will be located: inframammary (under the breast), periareolar (around the nipple), and axillary (in the armpit).
The inframammary incision is the most common, allows the scar to be concealed under the breast, and is the best incision choice for silicone breast implants. Dr. Broadway can position the implants more easily through this incision and causes the least amount of discomfort to patients after surgery.
The Periareolar incision is another good option for women who select the saline implant and although many think that having the scar front and center around the nipple might increase its visibility, the change in contour and color around the nipple conceals the scar very well in most cases. Unfortunately, women do risk a higher chance of having difficulty nursing if they elect the periareolar incision.
The axillary incision is another option for women who select the saline implant. This incision is small and distant from the breast. Dr. Broadway does not recommend this incision site because the recovery is more difficult.
Our Gentle Technique for Breast Augmentation
Surgical technique also influences the level of scarring you will experience after your breast augmentation. We perform breast augmentations with a minimum level of trauma to the breast, which helps to minimize your scarring. We also practice strict anti-infection protocols that reduce the chance you will experience an infection that can lead to increased scarring.
Postoperative Care for Breast Augmentation
At The Broadway Center for Plastic Surgery, your care doesn't end as soon as you leave our surgical center. We give extensive advice for taking care of your incisions and schedule follow-up visits until you are completely healed. We work with you to ensure your postoperative health and to achieve the best possible results from your breast augmentation.
We offer ScarGuard MD for our patients to purchase after surgery. ScarGuard MD is the #1 choice of plastic surgeons and dermatologists to help new scars, and flatten and shrink old scars.
Dr. Broadway also offers his post surgical patients 3 complimentary PhotoRejuvenation treatments to help pull pigment from scar and make it less noticeable.
Other Factors that Influence Scarring after Breast Augmentation
We do everything to minimize your scarring from breast augmentation, but unfortunately we cannot control everything. There are many other factors that contribute to your level of scarring after breast augmentation, including:
- Age
- Ethnicity, skin type, and family history
- Skin health
- General health
- Diet and lifestyle (smoking is very bad for skin and healing)
- How well you follow postoperative instructions
All these factors make it impossible for us to guarantee exactly what your level of scarring will be.
To discuss this and other considerations, schedule a breast augmentation consultation at the Broadway Center for Plastic Surgery in Denver, Colorado today.
