What should I expect the day of surgery?
It is important to follow all of your surgeon’s instructions for the day of your procedure to ensure your body heals as well and as quickly as possible. Like any other type of operation, breast surgery is an invasive procedure that involves careful planning before, during and after your procedure.
At the Broadway Center for Plastic Surgery, your care and safety are top priority. It is important to Dr. Broadway and his staff that you receive individually focused attention throughout your surgery planning, surgery and post-operative care.
Some things you will need to do:
- Avoid eating or drinking anything for twelve hours prior to your scheduled surgery time.
- Remove all jewelry prior to going to your appointment. Depending on your surgeon’s preferences, you may be allowed to keep your wedding ring on your finger. This will depend on your surgeon and the facility’s policies. Find out before your surgery date.
- Bring loose-fitting clothing to wear home from your procedure.
- Be prepared to awaken from your surgery groggy and disoriented from anesthesia and pain medication. Have someone available to drive you home once your surgeon releases you.
- Be sure you have your surgeon’s phone number and all instructions before you go home. Have someone help you with this because you will not be thinking clearly until you have been home for a while and have rested.
Mental preparation
Your breast surgery is an invasive procedure that will have an emotional and psychological effect on you, as well as a physical effect. Here are some things to be prepared for:
- Your surgeon will likely draw on you with a marking pen to show where incisions will be made. This is done prior to giving you anesthesia. This can be embarrassing and make you uncomfortable, but it is necessary to ensure his accuracy during your surgery.
- Your surgery will last a couple of hours and then you will remain in a recovery room until you have fully awakened from your anesthesia.
- You may experience mood swings immediately following your surgery. Sometimes the anesthesia and pain medication can cause this.
- You will be taped and bandaged heavily when you go home. Once the bandages have been removed, you will be bruised, swollen and sore for several days or longer. You will need to adjust to your new breast size and how they feel once the bandages have been removed.
You have elected to undergo a type of surgery that brings with it the need to readjust your lifestyle and your frame of mind in the weeks to come. Do not hesitate to contact Dr. Broadway and his staff at their Denver, Colorado office with any questions and concerns you may have before, during or after your breast surgery procedure. Your health and happiness is their number one concern.
