What risks will breast enlargement surgery present?
As with any operation, there are risks associated with breast augmentation. Fortunately, complications are very unusual, and the procedure is considered quite safe. We take your safety very seriously at our Denver practice when it comes to breast enlargement surgery. We employ all the necessary precautions to limit the risks associated with breast enhancement surgery.
Capsular contracture occurs if the scar or capsule around the implant thickens and tightens around the implant, but this occurs in less than 5 percent of cosmetic breast enlargement patients. The condition may cause the implant to feel hard or to become misshapen, but it can be treated with medication or by removing or scoring the scar tissue.
As with any surgical procedure, excessive bleeding following the breast enhancement operation may cause some swelling and pain. If excessive bleeding occurs, another operation may be needed to control it and to remove the accumulated blood. This is a very rare complication that affects relatively few patients.
Post-operative infection is uncommon, but a possibility nonetheless. We reduce the risk of such a complication at our Denver, Colorado facility by administering intravenous antibiotics during breast enlargement surgery and oral antibiotics after surgery. Most infections are mild and resolve without incident, but if a serious infection develops, the implant will probably need to be removed. The implant can then be replaced with a new implant several weeks later, as long as conditions permit.
Nerves that supply skin or nipple sensation may be cut or damaged during the breast enhancement procedure while the pocket or space for the implant is being created. If sensory loss occurs, the nerves slowly recover over a period of 1-2 years in about 85 percent of cases. If for any reason a valve or implant covering fails, the implant may need to be replaced. It is important to note, however, that the implant manufacturer does guarantee the implants.
